Malignant hyperthermia (MH) manifests clinically as a hypermetabolic crisis when an MH-susceptible (MHS) individual is exposed to a volatile anesthetic (eg, halothane, isoflurane, sevoflurane, desflurane) or succinylcholine [ 1-5 ]. This topic will discuss the incidence, pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, and acute management of MH.
General Discussion. Malignant hyperthermia (MH) is a dominantly inherited disorder of skeletal muscle that predisposes susceptible individuals to a life threatening adverse reaction (fulminant MH event) upon exposure to potent volatile anesthetics (halothane, isoflurane, sevoflurane, desflurane, etc.) and the skeletal muscle relaxant succinylcholine. Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) is a rare but life-threatening reaction that can occur in response to neuroleptic or antipsychotic medication. Symptoms include high fever, confusion, rigid muscles, variable blood pressure, sweating, and fast heart rate.

Malignant hyperthermia (MH) is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by abnormal calcium homeostasis in skeletal muscles in response to triggering agents. Autopsy, morphology, and genetic analysis were performed on a 19-year-old man who died rapidly after exposure to sevoflurane during maxillofacial surgery.

Indeed most of the concerns about MH since its first descriptions in the 1960s centered on the unexpected and often disastrous changes that can occur during the administration of general anesthesia to an otherwise healthy individual. Malignant hyperthermia. It is an anesthetic crisis that has been drilled into our heads since training.

Malignant Hyperthermia, though uncommon, is a life-threatening condition that is due to a genetic mutation, triggered by different sources. It can have a very sudden onset and can escalate quickly, and proving fatal if not caught and treated promptly.
